Nai is one of the main protagonists in the story. For as long as he can remember, he has always been beside Karoku living in the forest, west of Karasuna. When Karoku suddenly disappears into thin air, leaving nothing but a trail of "red water" (blood) leading to the sea and a bracelet (Circus ID), he ventures in the city, despair eating him slowly. Upon entering the city, however, he is captured and imprisoned by a Varuga named Mine. Under circumstances, he is saved by Gareki; thus, their adventure unfolds.
One peculiar fact to note with Nai is his acute sense of hearing; his sensitivity to sound allows him to hear far better than an average person. In vol.2, ch.8, it is revealed that Nai's true form is that of an animal called "Niji," deeming him an entirely new species as his cellular structure (of a human and a niji) have managed to co-exist (v.2, ch. 9).
Nai is essentially a child - new to his surroundings and has barely begun his journey to learn life. Because of this, there are multiple of concepts he has yet to understand so almost everything Gareki (or anyone for that matter) says, it all turns into huge question marks. But while he's awfully naive and easily scared, when it comes to those he values, he would not dare run and instead attempt to protect - even knowing such action is futile. In a tale soaked in mysteries and foreboding peril, Nai stands as the light - the epitome of innocence and hope.
I never actually thought that I would come to adore Nai. I'm not exactly keen with characters ( especially leading ones ) that begin as someone very naive and helpless, not to mention, looking like a lost sheep. However, Nai gradually grew on me with his innocence - his purity. His eagerness to learn more and more about life - the beauty and the ugly as well as his desire to help others regardless of circumstances is what ultimately pulled me to Nai. His origins is what makes him even more intriguing and I can't help but wonder whether he will show any more ~super~ abilities in the near future.
